We are seeking a highly motivated, organized, and dynamic scientist to fill a Postdoctoral Researcher position in Analytical Chemistry at the University of California, Davis (UCD) to work on a project titled: 'Development of nanoparticle-based assay for rapid detection of smoke-derived volatile phenols in grapes.' The incumbent will work within a large collaborative group of scientists and faculty from the Department of Viticulture and Enology (V&E) and Department of Chemical Engineering at UC Davis, Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences at Clarkson University (Potsdam, New York), and from the Crops Pathology and Genetics Research Unit USDA-ARS (Davis, CA). The incumbent will also work closely with government agencies and local stakeholders, particularly grape growers and winemakers throughout California.
Efforts of the Analytical Chemist Postdoctoral Researcher will be directed toward the application of the nanoparticle sensors to detect and quantify smoke-derived free and bound volatile phenols in grapes.
Objectives include the following:
1. To develop a head space solid phase microextraction gas chromatography mass spectrometry (HSSPME- GC-MS) method to quantify free and bound smoke-derived volatiles phenols in grapes
2. To compare the efficacy and reliability of the nanoparticle sensor to the HS-SPME-GC-MS method
3. To measure endogenous and exogenous levels volatile phenols in grapes using the nanoparticlebased sensor and HS-SPME-GC-MS method
4. To provide science-based outreach to California wine grape growers with presentations of research results as well as peer-reviewed research articles
The incumbent will also have the opportunity to collaborate and work closely with material science and chemical engineer specialist affiliated with the V&E Department.
