The Department of Medicine's Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Nutrition has an outstanding opportunity open for a Temporary Research Scientist/Engineer 2.
The Research Scientist 2 will support multiple basic and translational research projects in the Heinecke and Vaisar laboratories to gain increased insight on molecular function of lipoproteins in cardiovascular disease and diabetes as well as other related areas. The work will primarily focus on lipoprotein analysis using differential ion mobility analysis, but may also include proteomic analysis and tissue culture experiments.
The Research Scientist 2 (RSE 2) will be responsible for day-to-day lipoprotein sample preparation, differential ion mobility analysis operations and routine data analysis.
Responsibilities: Sample preparation and analysis 85%
• Processing blood and tissue samples. · Carryout a range of sample preparations using ultracentrifugation, sample fractionation, immunoaffinity enrichment and other sample preparation steps for lipoprotein analysis. · Carryout routine particle analyses on differential ion mobility analyzer. · Carryout routine biochemical experiments including SDS-PAGE, FPLC, protein and lipid assays.
Tissue culture 10%
· Perform tissue culture experiments related to lipoprotein function.
Other 5%
· Take part in the hiring, training and supervision of undergraduate student laboratory assistants. · Assist with troubleshooting and daily quality control of data. · Provide status reports to immediate supervisor. · Assist with basic lab maintenance including ordering supplies, preparing cell culture media, shipping stocks and helping with chemical safety paperwork. · Participate in research-related discussion during weekly lab meetings. · Perform related duties as required.
The position demands organization, commitment, the ability to work with others, the ability to maintain a laboratory notebook, and experience in laboratory protocols. The work may require handling of low level tritium-labeled compounds in some experiments.
Minimum Requirements:
· Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology or related field. · At least 2 years of experience, whether academic or industry, working with routine protein sample handling and purification techniques, or in a related field. · Must be able to perform repetitive but delicate work with care and exact attention to procedural detail. · Must be self-motivated with the ability to take initiative and work independently. · Excellent communication skills. · Meticulous record-keeping skills. · Strong organizational skills.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Desired:
· At least 3 years of experience, whether academic or industry, working with protein and proteome sample preparation, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry analysis. · General computational skills (MS Word, MS Excel) are required. Computation skills in programming (Python, Java, etc.) is desirable. · Experience with scientific instruments is a plus.
Required: Must be willing to work with radioactive material.
