LIGO Laboratory (the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) seeks a highly motivated and skilled Electrical Engineer to join its team.
LIGO Laboratory is a National Science Foundation major facility dedicated to observing the newly discovered gravitational-wave universe. Jointly operated by the California Institute of Technology and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the LIGO Laboratory operates world-leading observatories near Richland, WA, and Baton Rouge, LA as well as R&D centers on the Caltech and MIT campuses. The LIGO Laboratory's mission spans a broad and vibrant array of activities related to gravitational-wave physics and astronomy, including detector operations, R&D toward detector improvements, gravitational-wave astrophysics, observatory operations, and education and public outreach.

LIGO's observatory in rural Livingston Parish, Louisiana, is an approximately 35-minute commute from Baton Rouge, LA., and is about 1 hour 20 minutes from New Orleans. Caltech employs a staff of 42 at the Livingston observatory. Caltech has an extraordinary science impact across many fields. Job Summary
The Electrical Engineer (EE) has two main areas of responsibility. The first is maintenance and upgrade of the facility control and power distribution network and its equipment, including ensuring safety of electrical work performed on site. The second is development and maintenance of instrumentation control systems for the LIGO interferometer on the site, particularly aspects requiring expertise in power systems. The EE will collaborate with engineers at this and other LIGO sites. The working schedule is typically 5 days a week M-F, but in support of 24/7 interferometer operations, after-hours work may be required to restore systems.
Job Duties
- Perform or direct the installation and repair of facility control and power distribution equipment.
- Diagnose and repair malfunctioning electrical systems, apparatus, or components.
- Schedule and manage electrical subcontractor work on site.
- Maintain documentation of facility power distribution network.
- Serve as Approving Electrical Safety Engineer on site, with oversight of safety compliance, training and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Ensure subcontractor work is performed in accordance with applicable Federal, State, and Local electrical standards, codes, and regulations (NEC, NFPA 70).
- Develop and maintain electrical power and control systems for the LIGO interferometer.
- Perform maintenance on PLC systems used for interferometer and vacuum control systems.
- Develop and maintain emergency power systems (UPS) for critical systems.
- Develop and maintain facility grounding systems.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent education and experience.
- 2 years of work experience in engineering.
- Experience with design and installation of electrical power distribution, including the areas of grounding, safety and EM shielding.
- Ability to diagnose and repair malfunctioning electrical or instrumentation systems, apparatus or components.
- Ability to physically perform or oversee the installation and connection of power distribution wiring, and raceways.
- Competence in use of electrical measurement devices (voltmeters, oscilloscopes, ohmmeters) for diagnosis of system issues.
- General knowledge of NEC (NFPA 70) standard.
- Basic knowledge of PLC systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to design and fabricate electrical components and assemblies.
- Working knowledge of safety interlock systems.
- General knowledge of SKM software for documentation of electrical plants.
- General knowledge of Altium CAD software.
- Experience in designing PLC hardware installations and programming.
- Working knowledge of systems with Beckhoff TwinCat3 PLC software.
- Experience with sensing, actuating and other instrumentation electronics.
- Experience carrying out operations and maintenance of a scientific or technological R&D facility.
