Under the leadership of the Dean, the School pursues research that is timely, socially responsible and cutting edge, and works in partnership with industry, state, and federal agencies to promote the transfer of research to applications that benefit society. Current research thrusts include Communications and Information Technology, Energy and Sustainability, Human Health, and Advanced Manufacturing and Materials. The Materials Discovery and Synthesis Center (MDSC) enables the creation of novel and unprecedented materials, with a focus on discovery of new compounds and microstructures at a rapid pace. The MDSC provides users with access to flexible materials synthesis tools that are able to fabricate nanomaterial, two-dimensional, thin film, and bulk specimen forms from a wide spectrum of metallic and ceramic systems. Computational materials expertise and common software packages on the quantum, atomistic, and mesoscopic scales are also available to facilitate user research with predictive materials theory and simulation.
The Lab Technician is responsible for supporting the Materials Discovery and Synthesis Center (MDSC) by developing, preparing and implementing guidelines, techniques and safety protocols to training new users on the safe and effective use of equipment, while providing occasional input on experimental design. The position is further responsible for maintaining equipment and repair or coordinating repairs as well coordinating various other lab logistics as necessary to help keep the operations of the center effectively running. The position uses professional engineering concepts to perform moderately complex engineering assignments. Works in materials synthesis field on a major training and / or research effort. Works on assignments of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
3-5years of experience or a combination of education and experience.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Skilled with various fabrication /manufacturing methods, tools and equipment Creative problem solver Ability to develop and maintain technical competency to effectively run, and maintain technical equipment Ability to develop, plan and administer instructional and safety material Some exposure to general engineering, scientific equipment. Working knowledge of engineering principles and methods in order to independently perform professional engineering design work of limited scope and complexity. Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Working knowledge necessary to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments. Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.
Familiarity with material synthesis, theory and practices Experience running and maintaining technical equipment, including coordinating service and maintenance
