The Gale Lab at the University of Washington has an opening for a Research Scientist 2. The employee occupying this position will, under general guidance from the principal investigator, perform virologic and immunologic research in a biosafety level 2 (BSL2) and biosafety level 3 (BSL3) immunology laboratory. This work will be focused on testing antiviral compound treatment against SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses, isolating viruses from specimen, examining virus growth under conditions of antiviral drug treatment in cultured cells, conducting molecular virology analyses, and conducting innate immune response studies.
The primary job functions include:
•Performing established virologic and immunologic assays, while also using judgement to make minor modifications to optimize the execution of specific research projects. •Producing virus stocks and conducting quality assurance analysis of each stock. •Optimizing and performing complex immunologic and antiviral assays in vitro tissue culture systems. •Developing extensions of existing methods and protocols. •Performing molecular biology techniques including PCR analysis, western blotting, qRT-PCR, and cDNA cloning. •Organizing and recording data; detailed and meticulous record keeping and reporting are required. •Assisting laboratory members with experiments. •Strong organizational abilities with a keen ability to work to achieve deadlines and specified milestones. •Performing routine data analysis and assisting in the quality control of data. •Ability to work in a team and collaborative environment. •Willingness to quickly change direction and priorities based on a rapidly evolving research program. •Participate in laboratory meetings. •Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS •BS in biological sciences or related field. •At least two years of relevant experience.
Additional requirements: •Must be able to work independently and have a strong attention for detail. •Must be highly motivated with excellent time management skills. •Ability to organize and maintain accurate records. •Experience using EXCEL, PowerPoint. •Ability to work in a team environment and laboratory setting.
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.
DESIRED REQUIREMENTS •Laboratory experience in similar settings.
