Job Summary: The Packaging Designer develops innovative, cost effective, and structurally sound merchandising and retail solutions. The Packaging Designer gathers project data from WestRock sales and project managers, creates dies in the Computer Assisted Design (CAD) program, solicits and incorporates customer feedback, and creates prototypes for customer approval.
Major Job Responsibilities: • Intake customer project requests from customers and internal account representatives, confirm all critical information, and evaluate requests to ensure profitable fit and operational efficiency for WestRock and the customer • Identify the necessary materials and manufacturing processes for the project and provide alternatives as appropriate • Provide insight during the estimation process to identify any issues or cost savings in the production or assembly processes • Partner with 3rd party suppliers for non-inventory materials, and outsourced components (e.g. thermoforms, metal, and wood) • Convey concepts with quick sketches, photos and CAD visualization • Produce samples and mock-ups using various structural design techniques and skills including drafting (2D/3D), foam core modeling, and knife tools and cutting tables • Provide ongoing project support and answer all the customer’s questions related to the project’s structural design, set up, structural integrity, etc. • Leverage retail environment awareness and knowledge of specifications and guidelines to design optimal customer projects • Communicate project development path to Account Executives and customers as needed • Present project overview for production assembly teams and managers to provide insight into the components of the project from the designer’s perspective • Collaborate with customers, sales managers, project managers, graphic designers, design managers, and engineers to determine the best structural design and development approach • Leverage project management system for project development, record maintenance, and file/naming • Develop presentation material and assist with the presentation of abstract ideas for formal presentations in a variety of settings (one-on-one, small and large groups to include peers, supervisors and clients) in partnership with creative counterparts • Participate in or lead project review meetings • Create promotional materials and develop Bill of Material, Specifications, Palletization as necessary
Experience: • Prior student internship or co-op experience with retailer specifications, print production, and manufacturing process • Required: Ability to drive projects in a fast-paced deadline driven environment • Degree in packaging and design, industrial design, engineering, or point of purchase display and developing 3D products for mass production • Summer, winter or spring break experience in retail environment or with customer relations a plus.
Education: • Required: Bachelor’s degree with major or minor in Packaging Engineering, Packaging Science, Industrial Design, Packaging Design or related programs with emphasis on 3D development
