The Department of Mechanical Engineering has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 2.
This position will support the VA Center for Limb Loss and Mobility (CLiMB), a research group focused on preserving and enhancing mobility in Veterans and others with foot and leg impairments or amputations. The purpose of the research project is to develop new and improved lower limb prosthetic and orthotic systems that have the potential to normalize walking in people with disease, trauma, or weakness. During the course of the proposed work we expect the candidate to develop novel robotic hardware, software, and mechatronic devices to advance the state-of-the-art in lower limb prosthetics, orthotics, and assistive devices. In addition, the candidate will advance our knowledge of gait and mobility by proposing, designing, and carrying out human locomotion studies. The candidate is expected to facilitate publishing research findings by drafting scientific manuscripts and preparing presentations.
RESPONSIBILITIES: •Identify key scientific questions that warrant investigation. •Design experiments and protocols to answer key scientific questions. •Determine appropriate human subject experimental study designs. •Design and fabricate custom robotic orthotics, prosthetic and assistive devices. •Design and develop novel rehabilitation devices, including electromechanical devices. •Design and manufacture assistive technologies for disabled individuals. •Design and prototype electrical systems and circuits such as embedded microcontroller systems. •Create custom software applications to support study aims using MATLAB, C++, Python, CUDA, ROS, JAVA, MS .net, Arduino, or other languages as needed. •Collect experimental data using the following types of equipment, i) motion analysis camera system, ii) instrumented treadmill, iii) electromyography system, iv) force plate, v) pressure platform, vi) load cell systems, vii) robotic gait simulator, viii) mechanical testing system, ix) shear force testing device, x) digital multimeter, xi) voltage and current sensing, xii) cardiopulmonary testing device. •Perform data analysis and interpretation with the following software packages, MATLAB, Labview, excel, Vicon Nexus, Visual 3D, Arduino, Power Point, MS word. •Use computer aided design tools, such as Solidworks or AutoCAD to design hardware components and integrated systems under development. •Manufacture prototypes and final functional components using 3D printing, traditional machining, or injection molding technologies. •Maintain machine shop fabrication equipment such as 3D printers, lathe, CNC mill, etc.
REQUIREMENTS: •Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field. •Two or more years of experience or equivalent combination of education/experience: - Experience in Biomechanics research. - Experience wit the scientific method. - Experience with human subjects gait lab data collection procedures. - Experience designing and fabricating custom robotic orthotics, prosthetic and assistive devices. - Experience with the following software applications: MATLAB, Aruino, OpenSim, and Vicon Nexus. - Knowledgeable about how to operate the following types of equipment, i) motion analysis camera system, ii) instrumented treadmill, iii) electromyography system, iv) force plate, v) load cell systems, digital multimeter, xi) voltage and current sensing. - Expert with the following MS Office software packages, Power Point, MS word, MS excel. - Able to prepare and present scientific results. - Knowledgeable and experience with lower limb prosthesis or orthosis design. - Knowledgeable and experience with gait patterns and compensations. - Knowledgeable and experience with biomechanics, especially lower limb biomechanics and gait analysis.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE •Able to perform statistical analysis and work in collaboration with a biostatistician. •Experience designing and prototype electrical systems and circuits such as embedded microcontroller systems. •Able to interpret scientific results and draw clinical conclusions from scientific data
