UW Surgery's CREST program has an outstanding opportunity open for a Temporary Research Scientist/Engineer 1.
The purpose of this position is to research and develop simulators for advancing medical knowledge and training. This position researches and creates prototype simulation models to help drive the future of healthcare professional education. CREST is a group within the University of Washington Medical Center that has a history of creating innovative simulation trainers in the relatively new field of medical simulation.
The research and development uses comprehensive medical information and state-of-the-art technologies, including 3D printing, 3D scanning, and as well as traditional molding and casting techniques to develop new and innovative surgical simulators. In collaboration with industry partners, CREST creates the capability to deliver high-quality training and educational tools to the growing medical community. This position will report to the Director of the Artificial Tissue Lab of CREST with a matrixed reporting relationship to the Executive Director of WISH and CREST.
The major aspects of this position fall into the following two categories: I. Research/Engineering of simulators = 80% II. General Research Lab Responsibilities = 20%
This purpose of this position is to research and develop simulators for advancing medical knowledge and training. This position researches and creates prototype simulation models to help drive the future of healthcare professional education with the goal of improving patient outcomes. CREST members work in a team environment and its members have diverse skills and backgrounds.
Details of Major Job Duty & percentage of time:
I. Research/Engineering of simulators = 80% Hypothesize, research and assist in the development of best-in-class techniques to provide templates for LifeCast and Optical Scan human body anatomic structures and convert those to molds and casts in support of prototyping and low volume production for medical procedure training models. The competency is demonstrated by:
•Collaborate with and assist CREST members in sculpting to streamline process from data acquisition to molding and casting silicone and engineered parts creating accurate replicas of human anatomy; •Research different mold making techniques and materials to best suit demands of team; •Document processes and generate reports around the conversions to molds and casts; •Learn the fundamentals of anatomy and surgical interventions •With other team members develop simulation curricula for medical education training.

II. General Research Lab Responsibilities = 20% The competency is demonstrated by: •Interface and cultivate relations with professional and community partners; •Maintain program expenditures within budgeted parameters; •Document work and procedures for reporting to funders/collaborators
Minimum Required Qualifications
Education Bachelor's Degree in Art, Engineering, Computer Technology OR equivalent education/experience.
Type and Years of Experience: 3 months to 1 year's or more experience in related field.
Specific knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job satisfactorily include: •Specialized skills in sculpture/fine arts/fabrication •Proficient use of software programs including CAD and Photoshop; •Demonstrate expertise in a wide range of processes in modeling such as casting, silicone manipulation, plaster and epoxy molds, extrinsic painting, use of hand and power tools, etc.; •Comply with IRB regulations and processes;
Other Required Qualifications •Must pass a background check •Must be able to work in a shared laboratory setting
Desired Qualifications •Knowledge of industrial processes including casting, welding, etc.; •Sophisticated ability to liaison between groups (art to industry). •Strong communication skills across other disciplines •Ability to find creative solutions to new problems •Ensure consistent quality of created parts for the purposes of scientific studies •Collaborate with partner labs to improve the realism of our artificial tissues.
