Job Summary The Research Engineer Design Lead coordinates postdocs and PhD students in developing a next-generation autonomous flying prototype. The selected candidate will be responsible for the overall implementation and manufacture of the research vehicle.
Job Duties - Analyze, design, build, and test spacecraft and drone testbeds. - Lead the manufacturing process of the vehicle prototype. - Design, prototype, and manufacture mechanical and electronics subsystems for the spacecraft and drone testbeds. - Validate intermediate results through analysis and experimentation. - Design and modify experimental techniques and procedures; carry out research to develop alternative options. - Implement algorithms in C++/Python. - Conduct literature research; write research reports and journal articles; present research work at seminars and lead team discussions. - Assist Principal Investigators with leading and managing autonomous vehicle design team of PhD students and postdocs. - Communicate with hardware and software/subsystem vendors. - Perform other related duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications - BS and MS degree in Computer Science, Electrical, Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or related field. - At least 9 months of experience working on a design team in a senior capacity for spacecraft and drone testbeds. - Electronics and PCB design experience. - Electronics testing and troubleshooting skills. - Experience with embedded C and Python coding. - Proficiency in CAD (Solidworks) design. - Experience with rapid prototyping (3D printing) and designing for manufacturing (CNC). - Strong communication skills and demonstrated ability in performing at a senior level on a team. - Demonstrated high level of independence and initiative.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience using Vicon or a similar motion capture system. - Experience with the Robot Operating System (ROS). - Familiar with embedded Linux for robotics applications. - Strong background in control systems. - Experience developing algorithms in Matlab. - Familiar with systems modeling and simulation. - Familiar with test driven development (TDD) practices. - Familiar with Version Control Management Software (e.g. git, mercurial). - Experience in designing and manufacturing composite structures. - Familiar writing technical documentation in La Tex.
