Position: Research Internship

Overview of Position:
This Intern position is a unique opportunity for a student working on completing their Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field to gain experience in Chevron Oronite while contributing to important projects and business goals. The successful candidate will be part of a team of highly experienced and skilled chemists and engineers that are responsible for the synthesis, development, and manufacturing scale-up of new additives. He/she/they will also support maintenance and improvement of existing additives and manufacturing processes. The successful candidate will have skills working with chemicals and laboratory equipment typically acquired during their studies. The successful candidate will have training and/or experience running laboratory-scale chemical reactions or pilot plants, purification techniques, instrumental and chemical analytical methods and safe laboratory practices. He/she/they will be capable of applying these skills in preparation/synthesis of new experimental molecules, process development and scale-up of new additives, and support of existing manufacturing processes.
Key Job Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:
Assist research chemist or engineer in the synthesis of new molecules targeted to have performance for application as fuel and lubricant oil additives, development of new processes and the support of existing processes including pilot plant operation and plant trials. Participate in the planning and interpretation of the experiments; understand the correlation between operating parameters and process effects.
Perform purification and analytical characterization by techniques such as FTIR, GC and NMR. Screen materials in bench tests to understand structure / performance properties. Participate in the development of patents and literature surveys of new chemistries. Help with the development of business case and economic model of new processes.
Perform complex analytical characterizations by techniques such as FTIR, GC, NMR, GPC, and MS to aid in solving customer and manufacturing problems and to understand the composition of competitor products. Participate in the development of new chemical test methods.
Blend oils and evaluate new chemistries through key performance tests as well as industry standard engine tests. Design and execute experiments to define/correlate responses in key performance tests and use this data to create formulations meeting industry requirements.
Provide technical support to internal customers including problem solving, training, and presentation of data and trends.
Take responsibility for laboratory work area safety, maintenance, and compliance.
Manage laboratory work area; organize and work on project(s) with guided supervision; operate process research equipment (bench and pilot scale) making decisions and taking actions to ensure high quality experiments; process experimental data and product samples.

• Pursuing a BS, MS, or Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• GPA – 3.0 or above
• Experience conducting laboratory bench-scale chemical reactions or pilot plants and hands on experience with analytical and instrumental techniques.
• Good writing skills and willingness to give verbal presentations.
• Demonstrated laboratory independence and thought into experimental details.
