Job Summary: This position reports to the Associate Dean for Facilities and Capital Planning in the College of Engineering (CoE) and includes management and coordination of the full operation of the Engineering Student Design Center (ESDC). Oversee students, staff, and faculty who are using the ESDC facilities to ensure that all safety and security policies and procedures are met. Assist in the instruction of laboratory classes and other courses that use the ESDC facilities. Ensure that the students design and build projects that are feasible and safe. Evaluate student-designed parts and systems prior to machining and fabrication to insure that planned tasks will be within the safe operating parameters of the equipment to be used. This position will, in close cooperation with the Associate Dean for Facilities and Capital Planning and the CoE Facilities Manager, support the scheduled renovation and expansion of the ESDC.

Bend, kneel, stoop, in tight spaces, to access and fix equipment
Move and transport equipment and supplies weighing up to 50lbs.
May, at times, work with or be in areas where hazardous materials are present.

Minimum Qualifications: Science or engineering degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience working in a design and manufacturing facility.
Project management experience including proven technical contributions and leadership.
Experience with design and planning of new and/or renovation of existing facilities.
Experience working in an academic environment.
Skills working in safe laboratory operations and dedication to safe operating procedures.
Experience motivating, coaching and mentoring staff, and build interdepartmental and interdisciplinary teams.
Experience using interpersonal, communication, presentation and public speaking skills to work effectively and sensitively with diverse constituencies, and to represent UC Davis in a professional, confident manner that promotes a positive image for the ESDC and the College.
Experience developing and implementing strategic plans.
Machining and tool maker skills, including the use of lathes, drill presses, tool grinders, surface grinders, and CNC milling.
Knowledge of CNC programming and operation of CNC machinery using CAM software such as SolidWorks HSM, Autodesk products such as Inventor and Fusion360.
Experience to designing 2D, 3D, and solid model parts using CAD software.
Working knowledge of MS Office applications such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, as well as project management software such as MS Project.
Comprehensive working knowledge of material selection. Skill to advise students on how to investigate and decide on appropriate materials for project/experimental use based on engineering aspects of the properties, strength, weight, weldability, machinability, and cost.
Preferred Qualifications: Supervisory skills to recruit, select, train, supervise, and evaluate staff.
Working knowledge of design and fabrication using fiberglass, epoxy composites, and carbon fiber techniques.
