The primary focus and responsibility of this position are to (1) apply engineering principles, (2) build mathematical models based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD), computational particle dynamics, and finite element analysis (FEA), and (3) perform simulations and combine the model predictions with R&D lab experimental results to advance PPG’s coatings R&D, manufacturing and product application technology. The ultimate goal is to advance innovation, speed up product and process development, ensure robust process scale up, and promote continuous improvement to manufacturing.
The primary focus of the Modeling Engineer is to:
Define modeling projects aimed at establishing models to enable virtual experiments that benefit multiple business units. Typical projects are in the following areas: (1) non-Newtonian turbulent mixing, dispersing, (2) reacting flow and multiphase flow, (3) free surface flow, (4) vibration and acoustics, (5) viscoelastic materials behavior.
Generate innovative concepts for new technologies using numerical techniques. Identify potential research areas which would benefit new technology development.
Conduct detailed theoretical and numerical analysis to increase understanding and insights within the project team and the technical community.
Analyze results, summarize findings and communicate these to managers and directors in research, engineering and manufacturing.
Liaise with formulation team, product and process development teams to ensure robust process scale up for effective commercialization of technology.
Work with national labs and universities to advance modeling capability, expand capacity and accelerate model development.
A Ph. D. degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, polymer materials engineering, or related technical disciplines, with CAD, CFD and FEA course studies.
0~3 years computational experience for industrial product/process development; process simulation experience using Aspen Plus is a plus.
Proficiency in using commercial computational software i.e. ANSYS, Star-CCM+, COMSOL, Aspen Plus, etc.; Skilled in pre-processing, solving, and post processing, as well as coding ability for user-defined subroutines.
Competency in using desktop workstations and HPC system for executing modeling tasks.
Ability to use statistical tools such as JMP to analyze data from various sources.
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
