The successful candidate in this important role will join the Materials and Application Development group for support of CPChem’s Polyethylene (PE) products and applications. The candidate will be responsible for activities relating to new product/resin developments and new application development. This position will use material characterization, knowledge of polymer structure property relationships and end-use application requirements to develop new products. The candidate will interact with Research and Technology, plant manufacturing, sales and external customers to move the product through the development stage to commercialization. The candidate will interpret complex analytical reports to develop product specifications, manufacturing targets and QC screening tools. This individual will be expected to develop solutions to technical and/or fundamental scientific problems where no precedence exists and where innovative approaches may be required.
The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and will be expected to write detailed technical presentations/reports and keep existing PE technical literature (Technical Data Sheets, Safety Data Sheets, Technical Information Bulletins, etc.) current and up to date. The candidate will also be expected to provide technical training for internal and external customers and perform additional duties as assigned.
A good working knowledge of PE resins and familiarity with polymer chemistry, melt rheology, structure property relationships and plastics analytical techniques will be a plus. Experience with PE extrusion and conversion methods will also be considered a plus.
Typical responsibilities of this position may include:
•Lead/assist in developing new resins, resins specifications and/or new applications
•Support and assist sales growth by: •Translating market needs into technical targets
•Acting as a liaison with R&T for technology development
•Finding new applications for existing resins
•Conduct in-house experimentation for resin/application development efforts
•Prepare written presentations/reports and oral presentations summarizing project results
•May be occasionally called upon to present results to business management
•Plan, coordinate and participate in project activities of the team
•Work with plants/licensees on manufacturing related technical issues
•Work with other parts of the organization to determine root cause of product issues
•Coordinate developmental projects
•Support and recommend programs that relate to current/future business needs
•Perform R&T resin evaluations
•Carry out plant/resin validation studies
•Support plant activities
•Develop product literature
•Participate in personnel development and recruiting
•Provide training to internal and external customers as requested
•Develop product literature
•Execute resin evaluations and benchmarking studies •Be responsible for complaints resolution
•Be a consultant to customers on resin selection and use

The successful candidate will meet these requirements:
•EDUCATION: Ph.D. Engineering degree in any of the following areas viz., Polymers/Plastics/Chemical/Materials or closely related technical field. While work experience is not required, experienced candidates will be considered.
•COMPUTER SKILLS: Strong basic computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, data collection and basic data analysis. Preferred Qualifications
•Experience and knowledge in one or more of the following areas - single and/or twin-screw extrusion, pipe extrusion, cast and/or blown film extrusion, injection molding, blow molding, thermoforming, fiber extrusion, etc. will be a plus.
•Knowledge and experience with catalyst chemistry and polymerization, polymer characterization methods/tools, including rheology, GPC, NRM, FTIR, TEM, SEM, thermal analysis, and mechanical property measurement methods.
•Work experience in positions of Application/Product Development and/or basic R&D will be a plus. •Basic knowledge of polyethylene manufacturing processes.
