Department: 140301 - Civil Const & Environ Engineer
Location: Raleigh, NC
Essential Job Duties:
The Environmental Engineering Research Laboratory at NCSU is seeking to hire an expert in high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). Our lab is setting up new high- and low-resolution MS instrumentation to support ongoing and future research opportunities requiring identification of small molecules in environmental and biological matrices. We require a dedicated specialist to operate and maintain the new instrumentation, carry out sample analyses, and conduct leading-edge data analysis, and contribute to preparation of major research funding proposals.
Context: This instrumentation is part of a facility being established through the NC State Chancellor's Faculty Excellence Program in Global Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WaSH). This facility conducts science and engineering research to advance public health and environmental justice in marginalized communities in the US and abroad.
The employee will be responsible for method development pertaining to sample preparation, separations using gas and liquid chromatography, and analysis by high throughput (e.g., triple quadrupole) as well as high resolution (e.g., QTOF) mass spectrometry. The employee will be adept for using the latest software tools for analyzing MS data, in particular high-resolution mass defect data and nontarget compound elucidation. The employee will carry out research in chemical forensics ranging from high precision quantification of known species, to identification and quantitation of suspect species to discovery of novel unknown species in complex environmental and biological matrices (e.g., surface water, ground water, wastewater, leachate, soil extracts, plant matter, blood serum, tissues, foodstuffs). The employee will establish an efficient workflow for routine analyses as well as exploratory research methods. The employee will communicate results with faculty and students and will play an integral role in the preparation of major funding proposals utilizing our new instrument facilities.
The employee will be responsible for maintaining the GC-MS and LC-MS instruments and facility including ordering of supplies, managing accounts, training users, and planning/coordinating/scheduling workflow priorities with faculty PIs.
Relevant Ph.D degree (or relevant terminal degree), or relevant Master’s degree with at least 5 years of formal post-degree professional work experience. In rare instances, an individual with a comparable professional experience but less than a master’s degree, plus 8 years of exceptional relevant professional experience. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Extensive experience with HRMS instruments and the latest data analysis software packages and models, as well as separations techniques (e.g., GC, HPLC/UPLC) and sample preparation methods are requirements.
Excellent written and oral communications skills are required for communicating with individuals ranging from undergraduate students to high-level experts on the frontiers of environmental mass spectrometry. Excellent laboratory skills and mentoring skills for junior facility users such as graduate students are a must, as are laboratory management skills for streamlining analytical workflows. We are looking for someone to work collaboratively with PIs to generate new research questions and identify new areas to explore, creatively develop novel sample and data analysis methods and techniques, and contribute to leadership in the environmental analytical sciences.
A passion for analytical problem solving is highly preferred, along with the desire to protect human health and the environment – particularly in marginalized communities such as in the developing world – through application of cutting edge analytical science. A collaborative attitude would fit best in our Department/Lab culture.
