A postdoctoral researcher is sought to collaborate in a new DARPA-funded project to engineer sentinel plants that detect specific target chemicals at low concentrations in the soil, communicate with one another with signaling compounds, and respond as a quorum that activates detectable responses. The position involves designing chemical-sensing bacterial two-components histidine kinase signal transduction pathways (TCSs) to function robustly in plants. The postdoc will design the TCS computationally, have them commercially synthesized, validate them in bacteria, and collaborate closely with plant collaborators at UT-Austin to validate and optimize them for plants. The postdoc will work closely with a second postdoc at Rice who will construct predict mathematical models of TCS performance in plants.
This position requires the successful candidate to be a US Citizen, (per DARPA requirements) DARPA is part of the U.S. Department of Defense.
