Berkeley Lab's Biological Systems & Engineering Division has an opening for a Scientific Engineering Associate. This position is part of the Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU) located in Emeryville. The incumbent will fulfill a key position in the group for planning and executing projects primarily in analytical and recovery laboratories. This individual will lead projects that are designed in collaboration with academia/industry process development in an effort to step closer towards commercialization. Essential to success is the demonstrated skills in analytical method development and application and command of a broad spectrum of biochemical engineering unit operations. The incumbent will take on mentoring and training responsibilities and ensure that her/his team members are contributing towards the maintenance of equipment, utilities, and overall facility and are EH&S-compliant.
What You Will Do:
Under general instructions, execute multiple analytical related projects simultaneously, communicate with project leads and ensure high quality data are collected on timely manner.
Develop and optimize analytical methods to meet the analytical requirement across the different project teams. Methods include but are not limited to HPLC, GC, HPAEC, rheometer, bomb calorimeter, SDS-PAGE, and 96-well plate based assays.
Serve as equipment owner and be responsible for maintenance of certain equipment and work with facility team to make sure the service is performed on timely manner.
Serve as primary point of contact for clients. Establish expectations in a clear and precise manner ahead of project execution.
Participate in projects including bioproduct purification/recovery, catalysis and fermentation.
Apply root cause analysis, failure analysis, and other problem solving and prevention techniques.
Support proposal writing to obtain funds from industry, academia, and Federal programs at the ABPDU.
Contribute to publication in peer-reviewed journals and represent ABPDU at renowned international conferences.
Provide thorough and up-to-date training to technical staff to maintain and troubleshoot intricate equipment.
What is Required:
Knowledge/experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in analytical, biochemistry or organic chemistry.
Experience with lab management and equipment and facility maintenance and safety compliance.
Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of analytical techniques including HPLC, GC, HPAEC, SDS-PAGE, energy density, rheology, etc.
Demonstrate ability of equipment troubleshooting especially for HPLC and GC-FID.
Demonstrate knowledge of recovery unit operations including centrifugation, filtration, solvent extraction, column chromatograph, etc.
Demonstrated ability to lead projects independently, maintain appropriate records, and manage data.
Demonstrated ability in generating innovative ideas and initiative to lead R&D projects with guidance from supervisors and collaborators.
Strong customer service orientation and good problem-solving skills.
Strong computer, verbal, and written communication skills.
Exemplary ethical conduct of integrity, honesty, and mutual respect, both intellectually and in interpersonal workplace interactions.
Exhibit willingness to work cross-functionally and collaboratively, and learn new techniques associated with other functions of the ABPDU.
Additional Desired Qualifications:
Master's degree or above in analytical, biochemistry or organic chemistry.
Relevant experience in cellulosic biomass conversion and characterization.
Relevant training in using R and JMP.
