This position provides engineering management and support for Package Assembly Engineering staff in the packaging of Compound Semiconductor devices including diode lasers, optical amplifiers, as well as Lithium Niobate Modulators and detectors. Responsibilities include management of the Assembly Engineers in the development of new assembly and packaging processes, sustaining existing processes for production (including quality metrics and documentation of these processes), monitoring the performance of assembly equipment as well as new assembly equipment recommendation/planning.
Essential Job Functionsinclude the following, but are not limited to:
Manage the Assembly and Packaging Engineering team to perform the following key functions for the organization:
Introduce new product, process, equipment or materials into package assembly in a timely safe manner, using effective design input, evaluation testing, and project management.
Utilize continuous improvement tools, project management skills, team leadership, and basic engineering skills to 1) reduce manufacturing costs, 2) improve/sustain tight control of wafer fab manufacturing process.
Provide product line support in creating/maintaining all development and production routes used by assembly.
Investigate/resolve all process and equipment failure issues associated with the packaging.
Provide engineering equipment ownership via creating/maintaining equipment operation procedures, training personnel, setting up quality indicator procedures, developing effective PMs, and supporting maintenance/ops team during equipment down events.
Provide ownership of specific fab areas in order to maintain a safe environment, maximize resource utilization, and maximize commonality in process between all product lines in the area.
Support operations team in writing/maintaining required documentation and leading various assembly and packaging manufacturing improvement projects (e.g. Lean Manufacturing, 5S).
Maintain and improve our Manufacturing Execution System (MES/ERP) and related components.
Interface with Assembly Line Personnel, Facilities Personnel, and other groups that may require assembly engineering expertise and/or support.
Improve engineering team's core capabilities thru recruitment and by offering developmental training.
Interface with various product line managers/teams to assure assembly engineering team is giving the necessary support.
Minimum 10 years of experience in photonics packaging.
At least 2 years’ experience leading small development engineering or manufacturing engineering group.
Strong leadership, presentation, and communication skills.
Experience supporting the first/second shift photonics packaging operations team, writing and training of fab procedures, root cause analysis, and problem resolution.
Master’s Degree (or higher) in Engineering or related field(s) is required.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
Working knowledge of statistical methods with respect to semiconductor fabrication and assembly processes, and specific expertise in different aspects of optical systems packaging engineering.
6 Sigma Black Belt / Quality Certification.
Hands on experience with die attach, wirebond, and optical bench assembly/test processes.
Experience with epoxy and laser welding processes desired.
Experience with advanced packaging process development, sustaining, new process introduction, and ramp to volume
