The Microfibers Product Development Chemist or Engineer will conduct polymer and process R&D leading to the development of Eastman Microfibers products. The Chemist or Engineer will directly interface with Eastman technical experts, laboratory personnel, manufacturing, and market-facing colleagues, as well as external parties across the non-woven and textile fibers industries. Innovative new product options will be discovered and enabled by applying physical chemistry and surface science fundamentals to Eastman’s robust microfibers technology. This role includes collaboration around product design and attributes, evaluation of novel and established polymers, advisement on capabilities expansions, and building the product/process/properties cause-and-effect understanding.
The optimal candidate will have significant prior technical experience in polyester chemistry, diffusion processes, emulsions/colloids, and/or aqueos pH and buffer systems.
Deliver timely practical expertise which results in developing and expanding the microfibers product line and capabilities
Design, execute, and analyze development-scale experiments that produce valuable samples, data, and insight
Develop a practical understanding of the bi-component melt spinning process as well as down-stream processes which enable Eastman’s microfiber products
Provide data-based product and process contributions in both discovery and optimization modes
Apply theory and modeling techniques to apply structure-property relationships to end-use product functionality needs
Lead product development projects
Advise leadership on product and process innovation options
Investigate and help resolve complex problems as needed
Prepare and deliver impactful technical training to colleagues
Effectively communicate and propagate the valuable results of research and development work (personal interactions, technical reports, and presentations)
Develop understanding of relevant product application functionality as appropriate
Work with Eastman functional team (market managers, business managers, manufacturing, quality assurance, application development, and technical service) to achieve business results
Required Degree / Education/Work experience:
A Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry, Surface Science, Polymer Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or similar from an accredited college or university
Practical experience (2+ years) in the non-woven or textile fiber fields preferred Required Skills/Knowledge:
Excellent communications skills – to convey experimental plans and solutions to problems, to provide presentations, and to deliver technical training
Must clearly demonstrate excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
Must demonstrate applied knowledge of surface science
High level of mechanical aptitude with capabilities to master the interpretation and use of complex component geometries
